Mayte Garcia, Prince's first wife, to write a memoir

Mayte Garcia, Prince’s first wife, is writing a memoir.

EW can confirm Hachette Books will publish Garcia’s “intimate memoir,” called The Most Beautiful. The title is in reference to the song “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” which Prince wrote about Garcia.

Garcia, who was a Prince back-up dancer, married the musician on Valentine’s Day in 1996, and Garcia soon became pregnant. But the child lived only a week after being diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder. (Garcia and Prince later conceived again, but Garcia had a miscarriage.) The losses proved to put too much strain on the relationship: Prince and Garcia had their marriage annulled in 1999 and were divorced in 2000.

In a statement, Garcia says, “For many years, people have encouraged me to share my story,” and described her relationship with the late music legend as “a rare, almost otherwordly connection.” She says memoir will feature both “the highs and lows – always coming from a loving place, as this man is still a part of my family and always will be.”

The Most Beautiful is expected to release in April 2017.
